The Houston Astros have added a potential piece to their bullpen with the signing of Wander Suero. They signed Suero to a minor league deal, according to Chandler Rome of The Athletic. Suero will most likely receive an invite to big league Spring Training.
While he spent some of the past few seasons in the minor leagues, he does have five years of big league experience. That includes seasons with the Washington Nationals and most recently with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The baseline stats were much more impressive earlier in his career as Suero posted a 3.59 ERA and struck out 47 in 47.2 innings pitched for the Nationals in 2018. He then followed up that season with 81 strikeouts and 71.1 innings pitch for Washington in 2019.
In the 2023 season for the Dodgers, he posted an ERA of 7.88 in eight innings. The 6.13 FIP and five walks show the struggles that he faced at times on the mound for Los Angeles in the short period. The walk rate has been a concern for most of his career.
For the Astros, this is simply a move to see if they can work something out in Spring Training. If the pitching staff can find a way to maximize what he was able to do in Washington in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, they could get some innings out of him.
Besides that, expect Suero to either be in the minor league's or off the roster if he doesn't perform if given a chance in Spring Training.
