Houston Astros outfielder Chas McCormick committed a controversial and potentially dirty play at the end of Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

McCormick hit a ball deep in the hole at shortstop and was thrown out by JP Crawford. As he was running to first base, he took a swipe at the glove of M's first baseman Ty France, who could have had his wrist, elbow or shoulder injured.

You can see the play here, which was completely unnecessary.

There's an update to the story now though, with France saying he heard from McCormick after the game about the play.

Per Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times:

Ty France didn't know that Chas McCormick intentionally swiped at his arm on that play in the ninth inning. He thought McCormick just ran into him. McCormick texted France postgame to apologize about the play.

It is good to see McCormick apologize and hopefully that suffices for the Mariners. The Mariners enter play on Friday at 43-43 and can't afford to go settling scores by throwing at guys. McCormick is in the lineup and hitting eighth.

The Astros enter the game at 49-39 on the season. They are in second place in the American League West, while the Mariners are in fourth.

Houston currently holds the No. 2 spot in the American League wild card picture while the Mariners are 4.0 games back.

Luis Castillo gets the ball for Seattle while Hunter Brown pitches for Houston.

First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 p.m. ET.
