What we all knew was made official on Monday: Adam Wainwright of the St. Louis Cardinals has officially retired.

The veteran righty made it clear he was done following the 2023 season but he posted his official retirement papers on social media, which you can see below:

People keep asking me if I’m officially retired. Well, here is my official retirement paperwork that we turned in to the @Cardinals and @MLBPA. Retired? Absolutely, for all the best reasons. Will send more later. Love y’all.

He added that he got a puppy in his retirement papers, so we're happy for him across the board!

We aren't sure yet what the next moves for Wainwright will be, but he's gaining some traction as a country music artist and also recently appeared on postseason MLB coverage, so maybe there's some broadcasting in his future.

One of the most accomplished pitchers of his generation, Wainwright finished at 200-128 for his career. He pitched to a lifetime 3.53 ERA as well, making three All-Star teams and winning two Gold Glove awards.

He helped the Cardinals win the 2006 World Series and will leave a big void in their clubhouse for 2024.

St. Louis had a dreadful year in 2023, finishing last in the National League Central. If they are going to contend next year, they'll have to replace Wainwright's leadership and find multiple new arms to help in the starting rotation. He joins Yadier Molina as prominent Cardinals to retire in successive offseasons.

We'll have more on Wainwright's next moves throughout the offseason.
