Mets ace Max Scherzer to make rehab start Tuesday

Three-time Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer is on the mend from his injured oblique and reportedly could be back pitching for the New York Mets in the next couple of weeks. The next step in the recovery process comes on Tuesday.

Scherzer told reporters last week that he was about "90%" recovered from his oblique strain and on Thursday, he threw a three-inning, 50-pitch simulated game at Citi Field. Scherzer hasn't pitched for the Mets since May 18.

"Felt good the entire time, threw all my pitches, so everything's good," he said following the simulated game.

The eight-time All-Star signed with New York in December and was expected to combine with fellow Cy Young Award-winner Jacob deGrom atop the Mets starting rotation. deGrom hasn't pitched yet this season, as he recovers from a shoulder injury.

Scherzer is 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA and 0.95 WHIP through 49 2/3 innings pitched covering eight starts in 2022.
