Mets clinch first postseason berth since 2016

The Mets clinched their first postseason berth since 2016 on Monday night with a win over the Brewers.

After falling short of high expectations in recent seasons, the Mets are 94-55 and in position for their first 100-win season since 1988.

Citi Field will see the return of playoff baseball in the franchise's second season under owner Steve Cohen, whose willingness to spend big in the offseason paid off in the clincher. Free-agent addition Max Scherzer tossed six perfect innings against Milwaukee but was removed after 67 pitches in his first start since a stint on the injured list.

The Mets still have to fight to win the NL East, where they lead the Braves by one game. With the two teams currently tied in the loss column, the division could come down to a series between the Mets and Braves in Atlanta late next week.

New York's last postseason appearance was an NL Wild Card Game loss to the Giants in 2016. The Mets reached the World Series in 2015.
