The New York Mets have some tough decisions ahead of them about the direction of the franchise.

New York already has made a serious decision with former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns taking over as the Mets' president of baseball operations. Former general manager Billy Eppler has stepped down and now the club needs to plot its course.

Mets insider Andy Martino of SNY suggested the club should consider giving former New York star and fan-favorite Carlos Beltran a "significant role" in the organization moving forward.

"All of this is to say that the Mets will be well-served if new president of baseball operations David Stearns sets aside several hours in the near future for pasta and wine with Beltran -- or pancakes and coffee if they prefer, it’s the quality time that’s important -- and discover for himself that the team has an invaluable asset already on the payroll.

"Beltran is currently a special assistant to the general manager, hired by the now-departed Billy Eppler. The Mets do not have a general manager, and might not for another year. But they do have a baseball genius in Beltran, who should either manage the Mets or have a significant role in player development in 2024 and beyond."

A move certainly would make sense. Beltran was in line to manage the club in 2019 but mutually agreed to part ways due to the Houston Astros sign stealing scandal. At this point, we are years removed from that. Why not give him a shot now? He is well-qualified and could help the Mets right away.

It's unclear what direction the franchise will go, but giving someone of Beltran's caliber a larger role could be a step in the right direction.
