Mets' Javier Baez on injured list with back spasms

The news somehow continues to go from bad to worse for the New York Mets

New York confirmed ahead of Friday's home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers that star shortstop Javier Baez is heading to the 10-day injured list retroactive to Thursday with back spasms:

Baez prematurely exited last Sunday's loss at the Philadelphia Phillies due to what was later reported to be tightness in his hip and lower back. The 28-year-old joined the Mets from the Chicago Cubs ahead of last month's trade deadline and has been playing shortstop while Francisco Lindor has missed time with an oblique injury.

Lindor told reporters Friday he doesn't know when he'll return to the lineup:

Also on Friday, New York ace and two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom was shut down from throwing for two more weeks due to right elbow inflammation. It's now feared deGrom may not take the bump again this season.

The Mets head into the series against the Dodgers at 59-55 and a half a game behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East standings.
