There are now serious concerns that New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom won't face another batter in a competitive MLB game until 2022.
Per the official league website, Mets manager Luis Rojas confirmed ahead of Friday's home game against the Los Angeles Dodgers that deGrom is shut down from throwing for two more weeks after he underwent an MRI and then visited sports surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles to get a second opinion on the right elbow inflammation that has kept him out of action since the All-Star break.
The two-time National League Cy Young Award winner hasn't pitched since July 7, and he will now have to wait an additional 14 days before he has another MRI. Depending on where the Mets are in the standings by the final weekend of August, Rojas and company might have to seriously consider closing the book on deGrom's campaign after he went 7-2 with a 1.08 ERA and 0.55 WHIP in 15 starts.
The Mets head into Friday night at 59-55 and a half a game behind the first-place Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East division standings.
