Mets' Pete Alonso addresses Brewers trade report

New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso addressed his uncertain future after a new report linked him with the Milwaukee Brewers.

"For me, I love representing this organization," Alonso insisted following Tuesday's 3-2 loss at the Atlanta Braves, per Phillip Martinez of SNY. "I love being a Met, I love representing the city of New York the best way I possibly can. I love everybody in this clubhouse. Being a Met is the only thing I know. … It’s been phenomenal here so far."

Alonso, who has played only for the Mets since the 2019 season, is a three-time All-Star but also remains eligible for free agency after the 2024 season and has been the subject of numerous trade rumors throughout the team's collapse this summer.

During Tuesday's game between the Mets and Braves, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported that the Brewers "made a significant push to acquire" Alonso before this year's trade deadline.

"One Milwaukee source said the talks advanced to the point where the teams were within 'field-goal range' of a trade," Rosenthal noted. "A Mets official disputed the characterization that a deal with the Brewers was within reach, saying the conversations never accelerated to that level. Other teams, including the (Chicago Cubs), also spoke to the Mets about Alonso. But from the Mets' perspective, no deal was ever close."

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported on Aug. 3 that "Alonso’s name was out on the market" ahead of the trade deadline, "but sources say the price was extremely high, as (the Mets') heart probably wasn’t in it."

USA Today's Bob Nightengale later wrote that Alonso "was on the trade block" before the deadline.

"I don't know what the future holds, but right now, I'm a Met and I love being a Met," Alonso added during his comments. "I take pride in putting on the jersey every day and representing the city of New York."

The Mets' pre-deadline fire sale coupled with questions regarding how big-spending team owner Steve Cohen will approach free agency this fall and winter all spark doubts about Alonso's status with the organization beyond the regular-season finale on Oct. 1.

If nothing else, it seems clear Cohen and company fielded calls about Alonso's availability this summer even though trading the fan-favorite likely would prove unpopular among would-be customers who could have second thoughts about visiting Citi Field again before 2025 at the earliest.
