Mets' Pete Alonso, Starling Marte avoid IL stints after injury scares

The New York Mets feared the worst when Pete Alonso and Starling Marte went down with injuries Tuesday against the San Diego Padres.

However, almost 24 hours later, the Mets believe Alonso and Marte will avoid stints on the injured list.

Alonso was hit in the right hand by a Yu Darvish pitch but suffered no broken bones. Meanwhile, Marte left Tuesday's game with quad tightness; however, an MRI revealed no damage.

Both Alonso and Marte are considered day-to-day.

The Mets reportedly believed a trip to the IL was likely for Marte, but the right fielder thinks he'll be back in the Mets' lineup sooner rather than later.

"I was worried but they were probably more worried just because of how I was walking and I've never had that injury, so I didn't know how I was going to react to it," Marte said. "But we feel better now. Should be back out there in the next couple of days."

Alonso was relieved to find out he had suffered no breaks in his right hand and has to deal with only swelling now.

"I'm just really blessed and happy nothing is fractured or broken," Alonso said. "Just having the chance to get swelling out, I'll take that if I were to end up getting hurt."

In 58 games, Alonso is batting .282/.363/.546 with 16 home runs and 54 RBIs this season for the Mets.

Meanwhile, Marte is slashing .277/.316/.441 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs in 50 games.
