Mets receive good report on Jacob deGrom, want second opinion on sore shoulder

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom is the betting favorite to win the National League Most Valuable Player Award but can't stop giving his team injury scares. Most recently, the two-time Cy Young Award winner exited Wednesday's start against the Chicago Cubs after three innings with soreness in his right shoulder.

Per Anthony DiComo of the MLB website, the club's medical staff doesn't seem overly concerned but is sending the veteran, who turns 33 years old on Saturday, for a second opinion.

Last Friday, deGrom prematurely ended Friday's outing against the San Diego Padres with right flexor tendinitis but was cleared to start Wednesday. He's also dealt with inflammation in his right lat and right side tightness this spring.

"This is frustrating," deGrom said of his physical setbacks on Wednesday night, according to Jesse Rogers of ESPN. "I want to be out there as long as I can be out there."

He added he wants to take the bump "every fifth day" but may not have a say in the matter. The Mets head into Thursday evening at 35-25 and in first place in the NL East standings with a five-game lead over the second-place Philadelphia Phillies, meaning they could afford to have deGrom complete another stint on the injured list before the end of the month.
