Mets ace Jacob deGrom on track to start Wednesday vs. Cubs

New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom may be competing for more than just his third career National League Cy Young Award this season but sparked fear in the hearts of fans when he departed Friday's outing against the San Diego Padres with right flexor tendinitis.

However, manager Luis Rojas told reporters ahead of Tuesday's home game against the Chicago Cubs that deGrom should be able to take the bump Wednesday night against those same Cubs:

Rojas was sure to add the 32-year-old remains "day to day," which suggests the Mets will evaluate him one last time early Wednesday and see if he reports any pain or unexpected discomfort. Over the weekend, Rojas confirmed an MRI on deGrom's arm showed nothing alarming or concerning:

Per ESPN stats, deGrom leads all of MLB with a 0.56 ERA and 0.53 WHIP. He began the midweek as the betting favorite to win the NL Most Valuable Player Award.
