Mets to offer Jacob deGrom update on Saturday

The New York Mets are slowly but surely inching toward having both of their aces together in the rotation for the first time.

As noted by SNY, multiple reports previously said that Jacob deGrom is on track to begin a rehab assignment with the St. Lucie Mets on Sunday as he works to fully recover from the stress reaction in the scapula of his pitching shoulder that's kept him out all season.

Manager Buck Showalter spoke with reporters ahead of Friday's home game against the Texas Rangers and said they'll have to wait until Saturday for an official update on the two-time Cy Young Award winner:

It was reported this week that deGrom is considered "healthy right now" and could make his 2022 debut "in the second half of July" assuming his expected three-to-four rehab starts go well. The 34-year-old hasn't pitched in an MLB game since July 7, 2021, missing the second half of last season because of lingering elbow problems.

Additionally, fellow Mets ace Max Scherzer declared he's returning from the injured list to start at the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday. Scherzer went 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA across his first eight starts this spring before he strained his left oblique muscle on May 18.

New York right-hander Tylor Megill will remain sidelined until at least mid-August with a right shoulder strain.

Despite these pitching setbacks, the Mets went into Friday night at 47-29 and with a three-and-a-half game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings.
