Garrett Wilson makes massive statement about future with Jets

New York Jets wide receiver Garrett Wilson has been the subject of numerous trade rumors since early 2024, but the 2022 first-round draft pick also became eligible for a contract extension following this past season.

While speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Wilson indicated that he doesn't want to go anywhere anytime soon.

"I’m hopeful I’m a Jet for life and that we get this thing rolling, that all of our best days are ahead of us," Wilson said, as shared by Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. "I’m going to do my part to make sure that it’s undeniable when the time does come and those conversations are had. I’m going to try to do my part to make sure that it’s undeniable."

Earlier this spring, a report detailed how Wilson "clashed with some coaches" who previously worked for the Jets. That same story mentioned that some individuals within the club believed it was "inevitable" that Wilson would ask to be shipped elsewhere. Over the first three seasons of his pro career, the Jets went 19-32 with zero postseason appearances.

That said, first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has seemingly given Wilson hope regarding the franchise's future. Per Alex Smith of SNY, Glenn recently said his plan for his offense is to give Wilson "the ball as much as possible." That makes sense, as the StatMuse website shows that Wilson has recorded the NFL's eighth-most regular-season receptions (279) and the 10th-most regular-season receiving yards (3,249) since he entered the league.

"I want to be a part of something special," Wilson said about participating in voluntary offseason workouts this spring. "I don’t think a whole bunch of individuals make something special. I wanted to get in and know my teammates. I wanted to get in and know my coaches, learn the new material they’re putting out, and not be the guy that’s behind. There’s a way you go about business when you love what you do, and stuff like that is not really an option. I get the opportunity to come out here and work, make myself better at the game I love. Let’s take advantage of it."

The Jets seemingly hope that the signing of quarterback Justin Fields, Wilson's teammate at Ohio State, will help the 24-year-old produce more than empty-calorie stats during losses. According to Rosenblatt, the Jets' practice on Wednesday showed that Fields "will be looking Garrett Wilson’s way early and often this spring — and when the summer and fall roll around too."

Wilson is under contract through the 2026 season, but it sounds like he could commit his long-term future to the Jets if they match his asking price before Week 1 of the upcoming campaign gets underway.
