The Miami Marlins have hired Gabe Kapler to be their Assistant General Manager, the Miami Herald's Craig Mish reported Friday morning.

Kapler spent the last four seasons as the manager for the San Francisco Giants – winning NL Manager of the Year in 2021 – before getting fired in September. Kapler led the Giants to just one postseason bid during his tenure, as their 9-19 record in the final month of the 2023 season narrowly cost them a second.

Prior to that stint, Kapler served as the Philadelphia Phillies' manager in 2018 and 2019, missing the playoffs in both campaigns.

For all his experience in the dugout, this won't be Kapler's first gig in the front office. He signed on as the Los Angeles Dodgers' director of player development in November 2014, and he stuck around in the organization until leaving for Philadelphia three years later.

Kapler played in the big leagues from 1998 to 2010, spending four years with the Boston Red Sox and three with the Texas Rangers. He was a .268 hitter who ended his career with 799 hits and 82 home runs, plus a World Series ring in 2004.

According to Mish, Kapler was in the running for the Red Sox's Chief Baseball Officer position earlier this fall before Craig Breslow got the nod.

The Marlins are going through some major turnover in their front office this offseason, which started when Kim Ng stepped down as general manager. She reportedly chose to do so after D.J. Svihlik got dismissed as director of amateur scouting.

Former Tampa Bay Rays executive Peter Bendix stepped into Ng's place, and now Kapler will be his second-in-command.

Miami made the postseason in 2023, posting their best win-loss record since 2009 in the process.
