The Los Angeles Angels took the first two of a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. They have the opportunity to sweep the Cubbies and face their division rivals Seattle Mariners in a three-game series starting on Friday.
The Halos got the win, 6-2, thanks to their 25-year-old left fielder Mickey Moniak. Moniak came up huge in the sixth inning with the bases loaded as he cleared the bases and extended the lead from 3-2 to 6-2.
Moniak did his thing, going 1-for-3 with three RBIs and one walk in the W. He's had a fantastic start to the season and told Angels insider Doug Padilla what's working for him and what went right in his bases-clearing double.
“Just kind of put it in play, that’s all you can do right there, especially with two strikes,” Moniak said. “I’ve been feeling good at the plate the last couple of days and I felt confident in being able to do that. I got the pitch I was looking for and I was able to deliver.”
In 16 games this season, Mickey is slashing .304/.339/.643 with a .982 OPS. He also has four homers, 10 RBIs, and 17 hits in 56 ABs. Before joining the Angels, he had trouble at the plate as he was only batting .129 with the Philadelphia Phillies in 47 games that accumulated in three seasons.
He's seemed to find something in Southern California; it might have to do with him being a SoCal kid. Nonetheless, we love what we see from Moniak, and we'll see how he develops.
