Owner of Marlins' Triple-A affiliate dies from COVID-19

Lou Schwechheimer, owner of the Miami Marlins' Triple-A affiliate Wichita Wind Surge, died on Wednesday from complications caused by COVID-19. Schwechheimer was 62 years old.

As noted by ESPN, Wind Surge general manager Jared Forma offered an official statement:

"There are no words to express the loss of the entire Wind Surge family. Lou was truly one of a kind, someone who never met a stranger. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends, which included an extended baseball family. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Lou's wife and daughter at this difficult time.

"The Wind Surge team will work tirelessly to fulfill Lou's dreams and visions for the great city of Wichita, a place he was proud to call home. We will ensure his legacy lives forever at Riverfront Stadium."

Per KSNW, Schwechheimer relocated the Triple-A New Orleans Baby Cakes to Wichita, where the club was to play its debut season at Riverfront Stadium. However, minor league campaigns were canceled in late June due to the pandemic.

The Miami Marlins have been hit by a virus outbreak that has infected no fewer than 18 members of the club's traveling party and will keep the team sidelined from July 27 through at least Aug. 2.
