Padres land top international prospect Leodalis De Vries

The San Diego Padres have made their mark during the international signing period for the second consecutive year.

In 2023, the Padres spent virtually their entire bonus pool to land catcher Ethan Salas, the top international prospect. Salas has been able to rocket through their system, making his Double-A debut at just 17 years old. The Padres are hoping for the same with shortstop Leodalis De Vries as they have signed the top international prospect in the 2024 signing period.

The switch-hitting De Vries is the type of prospect that teams dream of. MLB.com lauded his advanced approach at the plate and ability to hit for power from both sides. His athleticism and above-average defense and arm make it probable that he will stick at short going forward. De Vries also possesses plus speed, making him a potential five-tool player if he develops as anticipated.

De Vries may rocket through the Padres' system as well. In announcing the signing, scouting director Chris Kemp stated that their new prospect would spend some time in the Dominican Republic at their academy. However, he added that De Vries could come stateside in March to join the team in spring training. Should that be the case, he could follow in Salas' footsteps.

This is also another step forward for the Padres' farm system. They had depleted their prospect ranks after acquiring Juan Soto, but have been able to swiftly rebuild their minor leagues. Adding a player such as De Vries will only help as they look to the future.

Leodalis De Vries has signed with the San Diego Padres. Once again, they have made their mark in the international signing period.
