Padres slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. day-to-day with oblique tightness

San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. is considered day-to-day with right oblique tightness, manager Jayce Tingler said following Tuesday's 4-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Tatis exited Tuesday's contest in the middle of the sixth inning with tightness around his midsection and did not return. Tingler said removing him from the game was "more precautionary than anything."

Via MLB.com's Ryan Herrera:

"He was a little tight around the midsection, abdominal-section, and so [taking him out was] more precautionary than anything," Tingler said. "Trainers went and took a look at him. Strength is pretty good postgame, range of motion [is] pretty good. We'll kind of go day to day. Hopefully it's just a little bit of tightness in the midsection, and it'll kind of go from there."

Tatis has missed time twice already this season. He suffered a subluxation of his left shoulder on April 5 and later tested positive for COVID-19 on May 10.

Still, the 22-year-old is having a solid season, slashing .293/.376/.693 with 16 home runs and 37 RBI on 41 hits in 39 games. He's already just one homer shy of tying his 2020 total of 17 blasts in 59 games.

Tingler is hopeful Tatis will avoid another stint on the injured list, but admitted it's "too early to tell."

The Padres are second in the NL West with a 34-22 record. The San Franciso Giants lead the division at 34-21.
