Padres' Wil Myers positive for COVID-19; Eric Hosmer added to IL

The COVID-19 issues impacting the San Diego Padres aren't getting much better quite yet.

Roughly 24 hours after San Diego placed star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., outfielder Jurickson Profar and shortstop Jorge Mateo on the injured list due to MLB's health and safety protocols, San Diego added right fielder Wil Myers and first baseman Eric Hosmer to the IL.

Padres manager Jayce Tingler confirmed Tatis and Myers tested positive for the coronavirus, while the other three were deemed high-risk close contacts. All players and coaches who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for a minimum of 10 days and then be cleared to return to team activities, meaning there's no timetable for when Tatis and/or Myers will be back in the lineup.

Close contacts must quarantine for seven days and test negative five days into the isolation period or later.

In corresponding roster moves, the Padres recalled utility player Brian O'Grady from Triple-A El Paso, selected the contract for outfielder Patrick Kivlehan and recalled left-handed relief pitcher Nick Ramirez.

While there's certainly no good time for any coronavirus-related setbacks, San Diego encountered these concerns preparing for a Wednesday doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies after Monday's matchup between the clubs was called off due to inclement weather.

San Diego smashed Colorado 8-1 on Tuesday to improve to 20-16 on the season. The Padres began Wednesday's doubleheader in second place in the National League West standings, two games back of the San Francisco Giants.
