Padres' Fernando Tatis Jr. on IL due to health and safety protocols

San Diego Padres star shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. has dealt with multiple injury scares and setbacks this spring and is hitting only .240 early into the regular season. The 22-year-old has encountered a new issue, as the Padres confirmed he has been placed on the injured list due to MLB's health and safety protocols.

Outfielder Jurickson Profar and shortstop Jorge Mateo were also placed on the list.

It's unknown if any of the players have tested positive for COVID-19, are showing symptoms of potential coronavirus infections, were exposed to the virus, or are dealing with negative reactions to vaccine shots. Players can also land on the list by violating certain health and safety regulations if they aren't fully vaccinated.

No timetable for their potential returns was given by the Padres.

Monday's series opener between the Padres and Colorado Rockies was postponed due to inclement weather and will be made up Wednesday as part of a doubleheader. The two clubs will play Tuesday night.

Tatis, who agreed to a 14-year, $340 million contract extension with San Diego in February, has nine home runs, 14 RBI, and an OPS of .867 across 26 games this season.
