Phillies ace comments on massive contract extension

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola addressed his recently signed massive contract extension on Wednesday morning.

It was reported on Sunday that the righty had signed a new seven-year, $172M deal to stay with the Phillies. It was also revealed that Nola turned down offers from other teams worth more money.

One day ahead of Thanksgiving, it certainly sounds like Nola is feeling thankful to continue his career with the organization that selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2014 MLB June Amateur Draft.

The 30-year-old made his big-league debut in 2015 with 13 starts and broke out with his lone All-Star campaign in 2018. Nola finished with a career-best 17-6 record that season and the best marks of his career in ERA (2.37) and innings pitched (212 1/3) as well. He also struck out 224 batters and registered a microscopic 0.97 WHIP across 33 starts to finish third in the NL Cy Young voting.

Nola has two other top-10 NL Cy Young vote finishes, earning seventh place in 2020 and fourth place in 2022.

He's gone 5-3 with a 3.70 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 50 strikeouts over 48 2/3 innings pitched covering nine starts during Philadelphia's 2022 and 2023 deep playoff runs.

Nola finished the 2023 regular season 12-9 with a 4.46 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 202 strikeouts over 193 2/3 innings pitched across 32 starts. He's established himself as one of the premier strikeout pitchers in the game in recent years, finishing in the top-eight in the senior circuit in punchouts in six straight seasons and recording at least 200 every season during the run except the pandemic shortened 2020 campaign.
