After a heavy workload in their three-game series against the Rockies at Coors Field, the Pittsburgh Pirates added a fresh arm to their bullpen on Monday.

Prior to their game against the Cincinnati Reds, the Pirates recalled right-handed pitcher Daulton Jefferies from Triple-A Indianapolis and optioned left-hander Justin Bruihl.

Jefferies was acquired by the Pirates from the San Francisco Giants in May in exchange for minor-league outfielder Rodolfo Nolasco. Jefferies had been designated for assignment by the Giants a few days prior to the Pirates landing him.

The 28-year-old Jefferies has totaled five starts with Indianapolis since joining the organization. He owns a 1-1 record with a 6.10 ERA. Jefferies was previously up with the Pirates as the 27th man during a doubleheader in Detroit on May 29 but didn’t appear in either game.

Jefferies has spent parts of four seasons in the big leagues with the Giants and Oakland A’s. For his career, the right-hander is 2-10 with a 6.64 ERA across 16 appearances, 11 of which have been starts.

Bruihl made six appearances with the Pirates after they signed him as a free agent on June 6. He totaled 5.1 innings, allowed four runs on seven hits, walked one and struck out four batters. He last pitched in the Pirates’ win over the Rockies on Sunday when he allowed one run in one inning of relief.
