The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-handed reliever Kyle Nicolas from Triple-A Indianapolis. He takes the roster spot of fellow right-hander Ryder Ryan, who was optioned following Thursday’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Nicolas has allowed one run in 10.2 innings across nine appearance with Indianapolis to start the season. Though he’s only allowed two hits, he has struggled with control and has issued nine walks. Nicolas has struck out 13 batters.

The 25-year-old made his big-league debut with the Pirates last season and went on to make four appearances. He was tagged for six earned runs in one-third of an inning in his first appearances but pitched well over his final three outings out of the bullpen to end the season.

Ryan made nine appearances with the Pirates across a couple of stints. He posted a 1-0 record with a 3.00 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 12 innings to start the year.
