As expected, the Pittsburgh Pirates have ended the rehab assignment for relief pitcher Colin Holderman and reinstated him from the 15-day injured list. He will be active for the Pirates’ game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Thursday night.

Holderman began the year on the IL after an illness during spring training resulted in him losing 15 pounds.

The right-hander made four appearances during his rehab stint with Triple-A Indianapolis. In those four outings, Holderman allowed three runs on three hits in 3.2 innings pitched. He walked one and struck out five.

Last season, Holderman was second on the team with 58 appearances for the Pirates. He finished the year 0-3 with a 3.86 ERA and recorded a pair of saves, including the first of his career on June 5 against the Oakland A’s. In 56 innings, Holderman allowed 55 hits, walked 20 and struck out 58.

The 28-year-old excels at keeping the ball in the yard, having only allowed four home runs in 84.1 innings pitched in the big leagues.

The Pirates acquired Holderman from the New York Mets leading up to the 2022 trade deadline. In return, the Pirates traded designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach to New York.

With the roster move, the Pirates’ 26-man roster is full. On Tuesday, the Pirates optioned right-handed reliever Ryder Ryan to Indianapolis.

Ryan made four appearances with the Pirates and allowed four runs in 5.1 innings pitched and struck out six batters.
