Cole Young was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on July 29, 2003. He played high school baseball at North Allegheny High School in Wexford, PA. He was the top-ranked shortstop and the top-ranked overall player in Pennsylvania. At North Allegheny, he hit .428 with a .554 OBP; he had 86 hits, 17 doubles, nine triples, 11 home runs, 64 RBI, 73 runs scored, 34 stolen bases, and 24 walks. Young was ranked the third shortstop in the country and the 17 th overall player. He committed to play college baseball at Duke University.

Young was the 11th-ranked high school prospect and the 20th overall prospect entering the 2022 draft, but he would be selected 21st overall by the Seattle Mariners and chose to forego attending Duke in the fall.

Young played his first season for the Mariners rookie ball team and Single-A Modesto, appearing in 17 games. He slashed .367/.423/.517 with a .939 OPS; he had one double, one triple, two home runs, 14 RBI, 17 runs scored, four stolen bases, and eight walks.

2023

Young debuted in the top 100 rankings as MLB.com ranked him the 99th prospect. He played for Single-A Modesto and High-A Everett playing in 126 games, he slashed .277/.399/.449 with a .848 OPS; he had 34 doubles, nine triples, 11 home runs, 62 RBI, 92 runs scored, 22 stolen bases, and 88 walks.

Future

ITD ranks Young as the 38th overall prospect and the Mariners second ranked prospect. He will likely start the season at Double-A with Arkansas.
