Rafael Devers' contract with Red Sox is most recent in offseason of spending

It's been an offseason of big spending in the MLB and on Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox joined the spending spree.

Third baseman Rafael Devers is expected to sign a huge 11-year, $331M contract to stay in Boston.

Per ESPN's Jeff Passan, "The deal is not done. The physical process hasn't started. But in the end, Devers is expected to remain in Boston."

Tuesday, Passan noted the two sides agreed on a one-year, $17.5M deal to avoid heading into arbitration with the goal of reaching a long-term contract.

A day later, the two hammered out the details on an enormous contract.

He is the eighth player this off-season to receive a contract that will pay him at least $25M annually in 2023, per Sportrac

Two pitchers — Texas Rangers' Jacob deGrom (five-year, $185M) and New York Mets' Justin Verlander (two-year, $86,666,666) — signed massive contracts, as did five position players other than Devers.

Dansby Swanson (seven-year, $177M) is heading to the Cubs and Xander Bogaerts (11-year, $280M) to the Padres in deals that will pay both north of $25M a year. Carlos Correa's 12-year, $315M deal with the Mets averages $26,250,000 per season.

Devers contract puts him between Aaron Judge (nine-year, $360M) and Trea Turner (11-year, $300M) in terms of this year's free agency class.

Last season, Devers, 26, played in 141 games and had a .295 batting average, 27 home runs and 88 runs batted in.

Per FanGraphs projections, Devers is on track for a 2023 season with a .278 batting average, 32 home runs and 101 runs batted in.

He's one of the brightest young third basemen in the league and is at the age where he's entering the prime of his career. If the contract pans, we know where Devers will end his career.
