Red Sox claim shortstop Jose Iglesias off waivers from Angels

The Boston Red Sox have claimed shortstop Jose Iglesias off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels, the team announced Monday along with several other roster moves.

Iglesias began his major league career with the Red Sox in 2011, playing 98 games in Boston before being traded to the Detroit Tigers in 2013 as part of a three-team deal that brought Jake Peavy and Brayan Villarreal to the Red Sox.

The 31-year-old has played 892 games at shortstop but also has experience playing second and third base. Boston needs as much help as possible right now with shortstop Xander Bogaerts, infielders Christian Arroyo and Yairo Munoz and utility man Enrique Hernandez unavailable due to COVID-19.

Iglesias appeared in 114 games for the Angels this season, hitting .259/.295/.375 with eight home runs and 41 RBI. In addition to the Angels, Red Sox and Tigers, he has also played for the Cincinnati Reds and Baltimore Orioles in his 10-year career.

The Red Sox entered Monday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays with a 79-60 record, eight games behind the Rays for first in the American League East.
