Red Sox land two-time All-Star shortstop Trevor Story on $140 million deal
The Boston Red Sox reached an agreement on a six-year, $140 million deal with free agent shortstop Trevor Story on Sunday, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.
Story, 29, spent the beginning of his career with the Colorado Rockies, where he earned two trips to the All-Star Game and two Silver Slugger Awards. In six seasons with the team, he's hit 158 home runs and has a career batting average of .272. In the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, Story led the National League in stolen bases (15) and triples (four).
Boston's deal with Story comes one day after the Minnesota Twins landed shortstop Carlos Correa on a three-year, $105.3 million contract.
In the Red Sox lineup, Story will likely make the transition to second base as the team already has three-time All-Star Xander Bogaerts handling shortstop duties.
According to Nightengale, Story's contract has a player opt-out after four years that would allow him to reach free agency again, but the Red Sox can void that option by adding a seventh year to the deal that makes the total of the contract $160 million.
