Red Sox SP Michael Wacha unsure if he'll start Friday vs. Yankees

The Boston Red Sox open up arguably their biggest series of the 2022 season thus far on Thursday, when they face the rival New York Yankees. Their scheduled starting pitcher for game two of the four-game slate on Friday is currently uncertain if he'll be able to take the bump, due to injury.

The 2015 All-Star was scratched from his last start on Monday, as he deals with arm fatigue that he has referred to as "heavy arm." Wacha missed nearly two weeks of action in May, after being placed on the injured list with left intercostal irritation.

The 31-year-old right-hander joined the Red Sox on a one-year, $7M deal in November after spending the 2021 campaign with the Tampa Bay Rays. Wacha made eight appearances (seven starts) for the New York Mets during pandemic-shortened 2020 season, but his best days came with the St. Louis Cardinals to open his career from 2013-19.

When healthy, he's shown to be a solid addition to Boston's starting rotation this year. Wacha enters the series against the Yankees with a 6-1 record, 2.69 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 50 strikeouts across 70 1/3 innings pitched covering 13 starts.
