Report: Nationals offer All-Star Juan Soto 13-year, $425 million contract extension
The Washington Nationals and outfielder Juan Soto appear close to agreeing on a hefty contract extension.
According to z101digital's Hector Gomez, "talks are intensifying" between the two sides, and the Nationals have offered Soto a 13-year contract extension worth $425 million.
If Soto signs, he'll have agreed to the second-largest contract extension in MLB history, behind only future hall of famer Mike Trout. Trout signed a record-breaking 12-year, $430 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2019.
Soto has two years of arbitration eligibility before becoming an unrestricted free agent in 2025. He's playing on a one-year, $17.1 million contract for 2022.
The Nationals reportedly offered Soto a 13-year, $350 million contract last offseason, which he declined.
Earlier this month, Washington GM Mike Rizzo flatly denied rumors the team had Soto on the trade block.
In 76 games this season, Soto is batting .224/.375/.437 with 14 home runs and 32 RBIs.
