Report: Rangers, Astros, A's checked in on Red Sox OF Andrew Benintendi

Jim Bowden of CBS Sports reported over the weekend that the Boston Red Sox have had "serious" trade discussions involving Andrew Benintendi. It was unclear which teams Boston was engaging with.

Sean McAdam of the Boston Sports Journal was able to provide a bit more clarity on Tuesday. According to McAdam, the Texas Rangers, Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics have checked in with the Red Sox about a potential trade for the outfielder.

A trade for Benintendi "could happen soon," though it won't be with the Miami Marlins, who previously were in discussions for the 26-year-old, McAdam says.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have also been dubbed as a potential landing spot for Benintendi because of Boston's relationship with Ben Cherington, who previously served as vice president and general manager of the Red Sox from 2011-15.

Benintendi's name has frequently been brought up in trade discussions after a rough year at the plate during the pandemic-shortened season. He appeared in just 14 games for the Red Sox last season, slashing .103/.314/.128 with no home runs and one RBI.

The Red Sox are reportedly looking for pitching and outfielding prospects in exchange for the University of Arkansas product. Boston already has depth on the outfield corners in Alex Verdugo and Hunter Renfroe, making Benintendi expendable.
