Despite his recent reassignment to minor-league camp, infielder Matt Shaw has shown why the Chicago Cubs drafted him in the first round of the 2023 MLB Draft. Among a large crop of minor-league talent in camp, Shaw is standing out in a very positive way.

Shaw has been able to flash the glove as well in any position he's been called to play. His approach at the plate during camp has been equally as good.

It remains to be seen when he will make his Cubs debut. But when he does, it will be must-watch television. It has become quite the trend for Cubs fans, as debuts generate excitement ever since the last contending window.

Drafted as a second baseman, Shaw has seen time at third base and shortstop as well during his first season in the Cubs' organization. Given the glaring need at third base for the club, it stands to benefit Shaw. If he can provide versatility, it should help build his case for a promotion sooner rather than later.

His overall numbers across the minor leagues in 2023 were quite impressive. He finished with a combined OPS of 1.018 in 157 at-bats. Starting in the minor leagues for the 2024 season might prove to be even more beneficial for Shaw.

With Shaw spending his time at third base, the Cubs could have a dominant infield group that already includes the likes of Gold Glovers Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner.

If he can continue his fast rise through the system, the Cubs may have another cornerstone player for multiple years to come in Shaw.
