Three-time Manager of the Year continuing tour of NL West with Giants

The San Francisco Giants are reportedly hiring Bob Melvin to be their next manager.

When the 61-year-old officially joins the Giants, he'll be continuing his 20-year stretch as an MLB manager with his fifth team, all in either the AL or NL West. Once Melvin gets his first game as San Francisco's leader under his belt in 2024, he'll have managed three of the five teams in the senior circuit's west division and half of the 10 "West" teams between the AL and NL combined.

While Melvin has yet to win or appear in a World Series, he's collected three Manager of the Year awards and was a top-three finisher three other times.

He earned his first managerial gig 20 years ago, replacing Lou Piniella as the manager of the Seattle Mariners ahead of the 2003 season. After two seasons with the Mariners that ended with a 156-168 record and no playoff berths, Melvin was let go by Seattle.

He served as the Arizona Diamondbacks manager for four-plus seasons from 2005-09, before being fired in May 2009. Melvin's run in the desert was highlighted by a playoff appearance and NL Manager of the Year Award in 2007.

The former big-league catcher had multiple interviews before the 2010 season but didn't land any roles, so he worked as a scout for the New York Mets that year. Melvin was serving as a special baseball advisor to the president and CEO with the Diamondbacks in 2011, before being named the Oakland Athletics' interim manager in June of that year.

Melvin spent 11 years and over 1,600 games with the A's from 2011-2021, winning the 2012 and 2018 AL Manager of the Year awards and leading the club to six postseason appearances. He managed the San Diego Padres in 2022 and 2023, helping them get to the NLCS last year before falling to the Philadelphia Phillies in five games.

Melvin has a career regular season record of 1,517-1,425 and a 16-23 mark in the playoffs.
