Twins place Byron Buxton on 10-day injured list with hip strain

The Minnesota Twins placed outfielder Byron Buxton on the 10-day injured list with a right hip strain, manager Rocco Baldelli said Friday, according to Phil Miller of the Minnesota Star Tribune.

Although Buxton won't need surgery, Baldelli said Buxton will likely be on the IL longer than 10 days.

The injury interrupts a red-hot start for Buxton, who is slashing .370/.408/.772 with nine home runs, 17 RBIs and five stolen bases in 24 games this season.

Injuries have derailed Buxton's career dating back to 2014, just two years after Minnesota selected him second overall in the draft. Since making his major league debut, he has suffered:

  • A sprained thumb in 2015.
  • A knee contusion and back spasms in 2016.
  • A groin strain and migraines in 2017.
  • A fractured toe, sprained wrist and migraines in 2018.
  • Several injuries in 2019.
  • Shoulder inflammation in 2020.

The Twins will be forced to make a decision on Buxton's future with the franchise very soon. He is eligible for arbitration after the 2021 campaign, per Spotrac, and will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2022 season if not signed to an extension.
