It was a dream start to the MLB career of Minnesota Twins 2023 second-round pick Luke Keaschall.
In the 22-year-old's first five big league games, he tied an MLB record dating back to "at least 1901." Keaschall was also batting a red-hot .368 before a pitch struck his right forearm during an at-bat against the Los Angeles Angels on April 25.
Despite only knocking in 2 RBI early on, Keaschall displayed the look of an elite table-setter, with 7 hits, 5 walks, 5 stolen bases and an OPS of 1.065.
Unfortunately, the Twins and their fans will have to wait a bit to see how Keaschall continues his MLB development.
On April 28, during an article with The Athletic, beat writer Dan Hayes provided a disappointing injury update on Keaschall, via Twins trainer Nick Paparesta.
"It's probably going to be a couple months before he's back into playing games," Paparesta told Hayes.
On the bright side, the Twins reporter noted that "at least for now," Keaschall won't need surgery on the non-displaced fracture in his right forearm. However, a baseball timeline of a "couple" months could push Keaschall's return back as far as July, or even August if there's a setback.
Although the update isn't catastrophic, it is a bit demoralizing considering the rash of injuries Minnesota has suffered early on in 2025.
Per Hayes, Paparesta also shared that outfielder Matt Wallner will be "reevaluated when the team returns home next week" after suffering a Grade 3 left hamstring strain on April 15.
The reporter relayed that the Twins are "much more bullish on Willi Castro and Royce Lewis, who are closing in on returning to the lineup."
