Tampa Bay Rays infielder Taylor Walls underwent hip surgery to repair a torn labrum, per a release from the team.

Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times had the full information:

Full update from #Rays: “Taylor Walls underwent a surgical procedure on his right hip to relieve discomfort from an impingement and repair a labral tear. He is expected to return to participating in baseball activities in February. His readiness for Opening Day will be determined later in the rehab process once baseball activity is resumed and an accurate timeline can be established.”

The hope is certainly that he's ready for Opening Day but the team undoubtedly won't push him and would rather error on the side of caution.

He was a huge part of the Rays team that won 99 games this season and advanced to the wild card round of the playoffs, playing in 99 games. He played second, third and shortstop and could be an answer for the Rays at short if Wander Franco is unable to play for any portion of next season (MLB investigation).

He hit .201 this season, popping eight home runs and driving in 36. He also stole 22 bases. The 27-year-old just wrapped up his third major league season, all with the Rays.

He debuted in 2021 and also played in 142 games during the 2022 season.

The Rays were beaten by the Texas Rangers in the playoffs. The Rangers have advanced to the World Series are currently playing the Arizona Diamondbacks in the Fall Classic.
