Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was among the 30 players nominated for the 2023 Roberto Clemente Award, Major League Baseball announced on Friday.

The Clemente Award – considered one of the most prestigious honours in the sport – is handed out annually to the individual who best represents baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions.

Guerrero is being recognized for not only his on-field talents, but also the work he has done off the field, which includes recently starting the VG27 Foundation. The charitable organization provides education, healthcare and athletic support to those in need within the Dominican native’s hometown of Don Gregorio.

The 24-year-old also recently organized a health clinic while working with his foundation, supplying a community of over 500 people with free prescriptions and vaccinations.

In addition, Vladdy sprung into action during the holiday season last winter, handing out food – including full-sized chickens – to more than 1,000 families in the Dominican Republic. He also runs an annual toy drive with his family in Don Gregorio, delivering presents to more than 500 children.

The three-time All-Star leads the Blue Jays in home runs (21) and RBIs (84) this season while hitting .266/.342/.436 with a 114 wRC+ in 137 games, worth 0.6 fWAR.

MLB will announce the winner of this year’s Clemente Award during the 2023 World Series. Fans can vote each day until the regular season concludes on Oct. 1.
