Watch: Angels' Shohei Ohtani becomes first player to 40 home runs in 2023

After his night on the mound was cut short after four innings, Los Angeles Angels two-way player Shohei Ohtani casually crushed home run No. 40 of the season, extending his MLB lead over Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson.

Currently slashing .310/.413/.685 with 40 home runs, 82 RBIs and 14 stolen bases. The 29-year-old is also getting the job done on the mound posting a 9-5 record with a 3.32 ERA and 160 strikeouts in 124.2 innings pitched.

Not only did he extend his home run lead, he also helped snap a three-game losing streak.

With the Angels seven-and-a-half games out of first place in the American League West and four games out of a Wild Card spot, every game will be crucial from here on out after going all in at the trade deadline.

Slugging 120 home runs and counting over his last three seasons including 2023, Ohtani has become the most feared hitter in the MLB and is leading the league in intentional walks with 14 in a lineup that is missing another superstar in centerfielder Mike Trout.

On the pitching side, Ohtani has been electric from 2021-2023. With a record of 33-16 and a 2.91 ERA adding 531 strikeouts in 417 innings pitched during that time.

One of the biggest names in the baseball world since his arrival, Ohtani is putting together a special MLB career that includes a Most Valuable Player award and Rookie of the Year award in his first five seasons.

Due to become a free agent this upcoming offseason, Ohtani will have plenty of suitors hoping to lure him to their respective teams and is expected to land the biggest contract in MLB history.
