Watch: Blue Jays prospect homers in first major league at-bat

Schneider smashed a 1-1 cutter from Boston Red Sox starter James Paxton, traveling an estimated 377 feet. 

The 24-year-old's feat helped him join an exclusive group, becoming the 134th player in baseball history to go deep in their first major league at-bat. Meanwhile, Schneider is the fourth Blue Jay to homer in their first plate appearance, with Al Woods (1977), Junior Felix (1989) and J.P. Arencibia (2010) being the others. 

Schneider is the first player in 2023 to homer in their first official plate appearance. MLB saw six players do it in 2022, including Joe Dunand, Christopher Morel, James Outman, Brett Baty, Spencer Steer and Josh Jung. 

Selected with the 849th pick in the 2017 MLB Draft by the Blue Jays, Schneider's call-up was a long time coming. Schneider turned down college offers and instead began his professional career with the GCL Blue Jays of the Gulf Coast League at only 18 years old. And, after playing parts of six seasons in the minor leagues, his dream of reaching the majors came true, finally, this week. 

Ranked as the 28th prospect in the Blue Jays' system according to MLB Pipeline, Schneider was tearing it up in Triple-A before his promotion. Over 87 games with the Buffalo Bison, Schneider slashed .275/.416/.553 with 21 homer runs and 64 RBI. 

Hopefully, Friday's moment is the first of many for Schneider in the big leagues.
