Watch: Four-run eighth inning lifts Astros over Tigers
The Houston Astros have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season, but they could be in the process of regaining their mojo.
After falling behind 2-1 against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, Houston rallied for four runs in the eighth inning to clinch a series-opening 5-2 win.
Left fielder Yordan Alvarez capitalized on a leadoff single from Jose Altuve, driving in the eight-time All-Star on a game-tying single down the right-field line. The hit, which came off Detroit's Yordan Alvarez, advanced Kyle Tucker to third base.
Tucker came around to score just two pitches later when shortstop Jeremy Pena singled to center field off Jason Foley, giving Houston a 3-2 lead. Pena, the 2022 World Series MVP, has arguably been Houston's best hitter to start the year following a disappointing 2023 season. He's slashing .338/.381/.469 through 38 games.
Two batters later, third baseman Alex Bregman reached on a fielder's choice, and an error made by Tigers third baseman Matt Vierling allowed Alvarez to score. Designated hitter Yainer Diaz capped off the scoring burst with a sacrifice fly, and closer Josh Hader went on to pick up his fifth save of the season, striking out two of his four batters faced.
Houston (14-24) has responded to a four-game losing streak by winning its last two contests. but remains tied for last place in the American League West standings.
Astros GM Dana Brown said earlier this week that he "can't envision" Houston being sellers at the July 30 trade deadline despite the team's disastrous start. Perhaps that was the vote of confidence his club needed.
