The Chicago White Sox signed right-hander Jordan Holloway to a minor league deal yesterday. Holloway opted out of a similar agreement with the Chicago Cubs. The White Sox pitching staff, depleted by injuries to Michael Kopech, Mike Clevinger, Liam Hendriks, Davis Martin, and Garrett Crochet, desperately needs depth.

Holloway pitched for the Miami Marlins in limited action over the past three seasons. An elbow fracture limited the righty to a single outing with the Marlins last season. In 2021, he completed 36 innings for the Fish in 13 games, four of which were starts, and posted a 4.00 ERA.

The Long Winding Road

He signed a minor league deal with a non-roster invite to spring training for the Cubs in the winter but made only eight appearances for their Triple-A affiliate in Iowa. He stumbled in those outings, allowing 12 runs in seven innings on 10 hits and issuing a whopping nine walks. The biggest positive in Holloway's game is the ability to generate swings and misses. He fanned 15 in seven innings with the Iowa Cubs.

The 27-year-old has already amassed nine seasons in the minor leagues after being drafted by Miami in 2014. Holloway pitched to a 4.87 ERA in 373 2/3 innings over that span. Jordan Holloway will join the White Sox's Triple-A affiliate in Charlotte, hoping to assert himself and earn a spot on the MLB roster.

What's On Tap Next?

The 6'6'' righty may find himself in Chicago soon rather than later, depending on how the next few weeks play out. Chicago remains 13 games below .500 and is likely sellers at the deadline with a lot of their pitching staff on expiring contracts. A firesale - or more injuries - on the southside could open the door to Chicago for Holloway.
