In making their one-year, $4.25M deal with Martin Maldonado official today, the White Sox made the corresponding roster decision to designate Zach Remillard for assignment.

Maldonado, 37, has spent the past six seasons in Houston, where he’s certainly been reliant on his defense. The former Astro slashed a mere .191/.273/.350 during his time in the Space City and has hit just .207/.282/.349 over 13 major league seasons.

Remillard, on the other hand, made his major league debut last season after seven seasons in the minor leagues. After a strong first week, Remillard struggled by the end, hitting just .252/.295/.320 by the end of the season over 160 plate appearances.

With the signing of Paul DeJong and the trade to acquire Nicky Lopez and Braden Shewmake, the White Sox now find themselves with a glut of middle infielders on the 40-man roster (Lopez, DeJong, Shewmake, Romy Gonzalez, Jose Rodriguez, and Lenyn Sosa). Someone was likely to go, and in this case, it was the soon-to-be 30-year-old, who will likely compete with Rodriguez, Shewmake, and Sosa for at-bats in Charlotte.
