Chicago White Sox utility man Romy Gonzalez has had a rough go of it health-wise over the last two seasons. After suffering a litany of injuries in 2022, he appeared in just 44 games this season before going on the shelf with a shoulder issue.
The Sox initially placed Gonzalez on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation on June 19 and then moved him 60-day IL on July 2. Now, his season has officially come to an end as the White Sox announced Friday that Gonzalez underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right shoulder during the All-Star break.
The 26-year-old has appeared in 86 games across parts of three seasons with the South Siders. He owns a .222/.239/.361 slash line with five home runs, 11 doubles, three triples, and 27 RBIs in 239 plate appearances.
Gonzalez can play a number of positions, but the bulk of his time at the big-league level has come at second base. With the White Sox' plans for the keystone position unclear entering 2024, Gonzalez figures to compete for the job during Spring Training, which he is expected to be ready for following the surgery.
