Will Smith continues hot start to season in Dodgers win

Dodgers catcher Will Smith has gotten off to a blistering hot start to the season, hitting a home run in a third consecutive game Tuesday night in a victory of the Colorado Rockies.

Smith has settled in nicely as Los Angeles' new No. 3 hitter, with a .421 batting average and an absurd 1.478 OPS. Smith's 10 RBIs are tied for first in MLB and his three home runs are tied for second.

"He's taking good at-bats and squaring up the ball when he needs to for the home runs," manager Dave Roberts said. "It's a sign his swing is in a good place, and it's good to see him in this spot."

Smith started the scoring for the Dodgers Tuesday night in the bottom of the first against Germán Márquez, blasting a two-run homer into the left-field pavilion. Smith also gave the Dodgers an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth, going the opposite way for an RBI double.

"I come up to the plate with an approach for each pitcher," Smith said. "He made a mistake and I capitalized on it. My swing feels good and I hope to keep it rolling on the road.

Smith's home run was one of three Los Angeles hit behind Julio Urías' dominant six-inning shutout. Max Muncy hit a home run, as well as Jason Heyward for the second night in a row.

Heyward only had one home run in 155 plate appearances last year with the Chicago Cubs and already has two bombs in nine at-bats this season.

Los Angeles has an off day Wednesday before beginning a four-game series in Arizona against the Diamondbacks.
