The New York Yankees' catching tandem is at full strength.
Jose Trevino, who was sidelined due to a calf injury just before the start of training camp, will make his spring training debut against the Atlanta Braves on Sunday. Yankees beat writer Bryan Hoch was the first to report.
This is fantastic news for the Yankees, as Trevino has proven to be a crucial part of the team's success. Despite lacking in offensive production, the 31-year-old backstop has always been a major defensive asset, boasting a combination of elite pitch framing and quick reflexes.
Being acquired by the Yankees in a trade early in the 2022 season, Trevino enjoyed a breakout campaign that not only made him a fan-favorite, but earned him numerous accolades; this included an All-Star selection, a Gold Glove award, and the prestigious Platinum Glove award given to the best defensive player in their respective league. Trevino became the first Yankee and the first AL catcher to receive the honor, with 21 defensive runs saved. He additionally enjoyed a career-year at the plate, which contained numerous moments of timely hitting.
Last season was a year to forget for Trevino, as he played in just 55 games and batted .210; on July 21, he underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist, ending his season. Trevino revealed that his wrist had bothered him since spring training that year, which certainly explains his decline in production. Even with the injury-shortened season, he accounted for seven defensive runs saved.
With Trevino officially healthy and ready to play, he will certainly be on the Opening Day roster and will share catching duties with rookie Austin Wells. The Yankees have high expectations for this catching tandem, thanks to Trevino's defensive prowess and Wells' offensive talent.
