Yankees, Royals make MLB history in series opener

The New York Yankees were already having a wacky season. But Monday's game against the Kansas City Royals took that to a whole new level as both teams set markers that made MLB history.

In the process of defeating the Royals 8-6 in extra innings, the Yankees became the first team in MLB history to overcome four blown saves in a single game and still end up in the win column.

Monday's game also featured a first in which both teams exchanged scoring runs in the latter innings to keep the game alive.

The high-scoring game was made even more remarkable given the game was scoreless through six innings.

The Yankees continue the current three-game series against the Royals on Tuesday. Although it is highly unlikely the next two games will be anywhere near as nuts as Monday's.
