As the UFC settles in with Drug Free Sport International, Jon Jones has not exactly warmed up to the promotion’s new drug testing partner.
According to ABQ Raw, who first reported the news, Jon Jones was accused of threatening and taking a phone away from a DFSI collector that showed up to his residence for a random test.
While the alleged incident took place on March 30, the victim, who is identified in an incident report obtained by Aaron Bronsteter as Crystal Martinez, reported it to the Albuquerque Police Department on April 5. Officers then met with Martinez at another location.
Martinez claims that a shirtless Jon Jones became hostile, “tense and puffed up” after failing to provide a urine sample. She then said that “Jones picked up her phone and started recording them saying he was going to sue them” before pocketing the phone.
Martinez said she was “terrified” after Jon Jones approached her stating that people who come to his house “end up dead.” The urine sample was submitted shortly afterwards with Martinez believing she could smell alcohol from the heavyweight champion.
In a statement published to Instagram, Jon Jones denied threatening Martinez and said that he was “frustrated with the unprofessionalism and used profanity out of frustration” before parting ways with Martinez on “friendly” terms.
Jones has been charged with assault and interference with communications for taking the phone.
Jon Jones Legal Woes
Jon Jones is no stranger to legal issues. The 29 fight veteran has been involved with multiple incidents that resulted in arrests and convictions including a 2015 hit and run that resulted in a pregnant woman being injured. In 2021, he pled no contest to charges stemming from a domestic incident with his fiance.
It is also not the first time that Jones has run afoul of drug testers. A pair of positive steroid tests forced his removal from the main event of UFC 200 and his knockout win over Daniel Cormier at UFC 214 was amended to a no contest. He was stripped of the light heavyweight title both times.
