Truex brothers sweep NASCAR homecoming at Dover

Martin Truex, Jr. and younger brother Ryan grew up in Mayetta, New Jersey, just over 100 miles from Dover, Delaware, where NASCAR's Cup and Xfinity Series raced this weekend.

Both were entered in cars No. 19 for Joe Gibbs Racing, and both found their way into victory lane.

For Ryan, it was his first career win in any of NASCAR's top three touring series in his 188th career start. It was a moment 11 years in the making after he should have won at this same track in 2012, but got held up by lapped traffic with only a few laps to go and lost the lead.

He took no prisoners this time around, leading 124 of 200 laps with the clear dominant car of the day on Saturday afternoon for an emotional victory. And the weekend was still only halfway over.

Sunday's Cup Series race was unable to run as scheduled due to rain, and it was postponed to Monday. William Byron and Ross Chastain led for most of the going, but it was Martin Truex, Jr. who took the lead late and then held on for his first points-paying Cup win since September of 2021.

It's the fourth time the elder and more well-known Truex has won at his home track, with three of those coincidentally being run on Mondays. That includes his first career Cup win, back in 2007.

Both Truex brothers went into this weekend with plenty to prove. Ryan is only running a partial schedule in the Xfinity Series this year, but wants to return to full-time competition, which his big win this weekend could help propel him towards.

Martin, meanwhile, has faced questions recently about how long he will continue racing, especially after going winless in 2022 and missing the Cup Series playoffs for the first time since 2014.

This statement victory goes to show that the 2017 Cup champion still has what it takes.
