Could Derrick Rose return to Chicago? POOL PHOTOS-USA TODAY Sports

Former MVP Derrick Rose reportedly interested in returning to Bulls

Derrick Rose might be gearing up for a return to the Chicago Bulls in the coming weeks and months.

According to Bleacher Report's Jake Fischer, there is mutual interest between Rose and Chicago, where the veteran point guard claimed NBA MVP honors in 2010-11.

"It's unclear how Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau can stand in the way of the Bulls' potential advances, and Chicago will need to shed contracts to bring on two ball-handlers at such expected salaries," Fischer writes, adding that the Bulls will likely search for more than one point guard this summer.

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported earlier this week that Rose was on Chicago's radar. However, he added that the veteran point guard isn't necessarily at the top of the team's priority list.

It's no secret the Bulls are in the market for a starting point guard this summer, but they also need added depth on the bench. Rose might not be a starter, but he surely would be a solid addition off the bench.

The 32-year-old averaged 14.7 points, 2.6 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game last season with the Detroit Pistons and New York Knicks while shooting 47% from the field and 38.8% from deep. His 2020-21 performance made it quite clear that he can still contribute to a winning team, and considering the Bulls are looking to take a step forward next season, Rose could be part of the solution.

However, the Bulls have a lot of holes to fill this summer, and Rose is due for a sizable contract. If he's seeking too much money, Chicago could opt to spend the money elsewhere. In addition, several playoff-caliber teams will likely be interested in Rose's services.

The Bulls selected Rose first overall in the 2008 draft. He played for the team from 2008-2016, winning Rookie of the Year, an MVP award and earning three All-Star selections.
